For a song
The Real Salt Lake flags will be flying, the house packed, the crowd pumped.
But Rock On isn't talking about another run for the MLS Cup (though that, too, is possible). He's referring to Paul McCartney coming to Rio Tinto Stadium, July 13.
Which raises a question or two.
First, is there any chance Dave Checketts can talk Sir Paul into wearing an RSL jersey for the occasion?
And second, any truth to the rumor McCartney plans to sign over the rights to "Getting Better" for RSL's new theme song?
Party central
A Los Angeles Times columnist took a predictable approach during the Western Conference semifinals, earlier this month: He resorted to Utah bashing.
T.J. Simers labeled Salt Lake "the most miserable place on earth" one day and "a wasteland" the next.
Totally unfair.
But after viewing the schedule for the Associated Press Sports Editors convention in Salt Lake, next month, Rock On is starting to wonder if Simers has a point. Among the planned social activities: A draft night interview with the Jazz management, museum-hopping, a stop at the zoo, a hike in the canyon, and a Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsal.
What, no ice blocking at Sugarhouse Park?
Go the distance
The farm that was the setting for the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" is up for sale. That includes the farmhouse, baseball diamond, six outbuildings, and 193 acres of cornfields where the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson resides.
Asking price: $5.4 million.
Rock On figures for $5.4 million he could buy property where they filmed "Blue Hawaii" and make a lot more money when the real estate market rebounds.
Plus, he wouldn't have to shuck any corn.
Striking out
According to the Mirror newspaper, 12 percent of English soccer fans say they would give up sex for a year if their team wins the World Cup.
What wasn't reported was that since they were soccer geeks, the other 88 percent weren't expecting anything amorous to happen in the next year, anyway.
Apple fever
Former Knicks coach Isiah Thomas told the New York Post he thinks LeBron James should take his free agency to the Big Apple.
"As an athlete, a competitor — at least me — you want to be in that arena," said Thomas to a Miami radio station. "I want to feel that sweat, I want to feel that intensity. I want to feel that emotion. That's what I thrive on."
Seeing how things went so well when he was in New York.
