Davis celebrates their 1-0 victory over Fremont in the 5A boys soccer state championship final at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy Thursday.

There were plenty of dramatic finishes throughout the 2009-2010 high school sports season, perhaps none more so than Juan Diego's improbable Hail-Mary victory over Hurricane in the 3A football state championship game last fall.
In the race for the 31st annual Deseret News All-Sports awards, there was similar drama — in Class 5A that is.
On the same night that Bingham's softball team claimed the 5A championship last week, Davis' boys soccer team matched that title with one of its own and in the process vaulted the Davis County school to a one-point victory over Bingham in the quest for the 5A All-Sports title.
A year after three of the five classification races were decided by five points or less, 5A provided the only tight finish in the 2009-2010 school year.
Springville, Park City, South Summit and St. Joseph all enjoyed relatively easy all-sports titles in their respective classifications.
The Deseret News All-Sports award denotes the top overall athletic programs in each of the five classifications. Schools earn All-Sports points for placing in the top eight positions at state. Ten points are awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. Points are divided when teams tie.
Schools earn points in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball and softball.
Every school in 4A and 2A earned at least one point, while three 5A schools, one 3A school and
six 1A schools were blanked without a single top-eight finish in any sport.
Brighton, which finished tied for third in 5A, holds the record with 11 consecutive awards from 1980-1991. Juan Diego holds the record for most awards points in a season with 112.
Here's a look at each classification.
Class 5A: Last year Bingham edged Davis by a half a point to claim the 5A All-Sports title, but a year later the Darts returned the favor.
The boys soccer title captured on the second-to-last day of the spring sports season vaulted Davis past Bingham as the premier 5A school with 78 All-Sports points to Bingham's 77.
It was Davis' only state title, but it came at the perfect time.
