Cougars get another lineman commitment

PROVO — Another defensive line recruit has committed to the BYU football program.

Defensive endStehly Reden, a 6-foot-4, 235-pounder from Valley Center, Calif., has pledged to become part of the Cougars' 2011 recruiting class, according to totalbluesports.com. Of the eight commitments BYU has secured so far, four of them play on the defensive line. Reden is the first recruit to commit to BYU for the 2011 class from outside the state of Utah.

Reden is the younger brother of former Cougar Garrett Reden, an offensive lineman who played from 2007-08.

Stehly Reden reportedly was recruited by several Pac-10 schools and had scholarship offers from Colorado State and San Diego State.

The other high school players who have committed to BYU are defensive tackle Kesni Tausinga, defensive tackle Moses Kaumatule, defensive end Baker Pritchard and fullback Manoa Pikula, all from Bingham High; Hunter High offensive lineman Lui Lapuaho, Mountain Crest quarterback Alex Kuresa and Pleasant Grove linebacker Austin Heder.

Weber State men claim Big Sky honor

The Weber State men and the Sacramento State women have captured the 2009-10 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophies.

Weber State's men picked up a record 16th Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy, and its second straight. The Wildcats earned 79.5 points in the six sports for an average of 13.25 points per sport. Northern Arizona was second at 11.25, and Montana was third at 10.75.

Points are determined based on team finishes in the regular-season standings for soccer, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's basketball and football. Points are awarded based on finish at the Big Sky Championship in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf.

Thomas signs contract, retires a Dolphin

MIAMI — Zach Thomas got the idea Wednesday, thinking maybe he could sign a one-day contract with the Miami Dolphins and retire as part of the franchise.

His agent asked the Dolphins. Thomas got his answer within minutes.
