Lindon to convert church into center

LINDON — Lindon has big plans for a small historic church near its city center.

After receiving a $212,000 Community Development Block Grant, the city will purchase the church at 25 N. Main from the LDS Church and use the funds to convert a portion of the building into Lindon's first senior center. The rest will be remodeled and used as a community center.

"We're really excited for it," said Adam Cowie, Lindon's planning director. "It's very convenient to become a city building, where it's located so close to other city facilities."

The building's existing eating and seating areas will be converted into common rooms, and the family history library will be updated and computers will be left there for seniors to use. The pews will remain in place, and the chapel area will host recitals, concerts and lectures.

The LDS Church is currently building another meetinghouse to replace the one on Main Street, which it has outgrown. The city expects to take ownership of the building this fall and begin remodeling and hopes to open the senior center in 2011.
