England: MP stabbed
LONDON — A British lawmaker was stabbed Friday by a woman he did not know during an advice session with his constituents, Labour Party officials said.
Stephen Timms, the member of Parliament for the constituency of East Ham and the former financial secretary to the Treasury, was being treated at Royal London Hospital after the attack for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. A spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said a 21-year-old woman was arrested.
Haiti: Briton freed
PORT-AU-PRINCE — A British citizen kidnapped early in the week while in Haiti to do post-earthquake reconstruction was freed Friday, the agency employing him said.
The Pan-American Development Foundation said the released man had recently arrived on a short-term contract. Police were still searching for a Haitian colleague kidnapped with him Monday. Their identities were not being released to protect their safety and privacy.
Iraq: Suicide attack
BAGHDAD — Three suicide bombers blew themselves up at a sports field in a predominantly Shiite town in northern Iraq on Friday, killing at least 10 people and wounding another 120, police and hospital officials said.
The attack took place during a soccer game Friday evening in the town of Tal Afar, located between the Syrian border and the volatile city of Mosul.
Kyrgyzstan: Clash
JALAL-ABAD — Gunfire erupted in Kyrgyzstan on Friday as hundreds of interim government backers fought supporters of deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev for control over regional government buildings. Mexico: 6 killed
MEXICO CITY — Gunmen killed six men Friday and wounded two more in a drive-by shooting near a kindergarten in a northern Mexico region besieged by drug gang battles.

Russia: Search delay
MOSCOW — Russian officials said Friday the search for 24 workers missing after a coal mine explosion won't resume for a week, apparently eliminating hopes of finding them alive.
Rescue operations at the Raspadskaya mine in western Siberia were suspended Thursday because of heavy concentrations of explosive methane and fires in the tunnels. On Friday, Emergencies Ministry official Pavel Plat said the methane couldn't be reduced to safe levels for at least a week, and a protest rally by the mine's employees was reportedly broken up brutally by riot police.
