SALT LAKE CITY — Five people have been selected by the 3rd District Judicial Nominating Commission as potential candidates for an open position in 3rd District Court.
Katherine Bernards-Goodman with the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office; senior Salt Lake City Corp. attorney Evelyn "Eve" Furse; assistant attorney general Scott W. Reed; Andrew H. Stone of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough; and local attorney Sean N. Egan of Salt Lake City, all are vying for the vacancy left open by 3rd District Judge Stephen L. Roth, who was appointed to the Utah Court of Appeals.
The 3rd Judicial District has jurisdiction over Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties. After 10 days in which public comments will be accepted, the names will be turned over to the governor, who then has 30 days to pick a nominee.
The Senate Confirmation Committee will review the qualifications of the governor's selections and will hold a public hearing and interview session. The name of the final nominee will be given to the Utah State Senate, which has 60 days to confirm the nominee.
Those wishing to make comments on the nominee can submit written comments to 3rd District Nominating Commission Chair Trina Higgins at the Administrative Office of the Courts, P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-0241. The deadline for written comments is 5 p.m. May 24.
