Hungary: Chess guru dies
BUDAPEST — Andor Lilienthal, the last surviving member of 27 original grandmaster chess players, died Saturday in Budapest at the age of 99, the Hungarian Chess Federation said.
Lilienthal died at his home after a long illness, the federation's communications director Zsuzsa Veroci said. "He was a phenomenon," said Veroci, also a FIDE woman grandmaster. "It may sound like an exaggeration, but he had no enemies, just friends. He loved chess and was always helping other players."
India: 8 soldiers killed
NEW DELHI — Maoist rebels blew up an army truck Saturday, killing eight paramilitary soldiers and wounding two others in a densely forested area in central India, a top police official said.
The rebels planted and triggered an explosive device that blew up an armored truck traveling in the densely forested Bijapur district of Chattisgarh state, said Vishwa Ranjan, the state's director general of police.
Iraq: House bomb kills 3
BAGHDAD — Bombs planted inside the home of a policeman in northern Iraq exploded Saturday, killing him, his mother and one other resident, a security official said.
The bombing was one of several attacks around Iraq's north that killed at least 10 people over the weekend, a sign that authorities are struggling to maintain security as the country's politicians clamor over the shape of a new government two months after an inconclusive election.
Italy: Bishop resigns
VATICAN CITY — A leading German bishop who has acknowledged slapping children and is being investigated for sexual abuse of minors and financial misconduct lost his job Saturday as Pope Benedict XVI continued cleaning house.
The German-born pontiff formally accepted the resignation offer made April 21 by Bishop Walter Mixa, an outspoken conservative voice in the German church and a military chaplain for Germany, as well as head of the Augsburg diocese. Mixa's posting to Augsburg in summer 2005 was among the first appointments Benedict made at the start of his papacy.
