SALT LAKE CITY — You knew it had to be coming — recognition in the U.S. Scouting program for playing video games.

The

Boy Scouts of America recently introduced a new belt loop and academic

pin available to Cub Scouts for having an understanding and ability

with computer and video games.

The Boy Scouts also have three new merit badges and four temporary, revived merit badges available this year.

According to some Scouting sources, these new awards were among the most controversial in recent years.

John

Gailey, spokesman for the National Parks Council, said he was surprised

when he heard about these new video gaming awards and initially feared

they would simply be skill-oriented.

\"However,

it's not about becoming a great gamer,\" he said, explaining the awards

are based on Cubs learning about licensing, game ratings and

responsibility.

He stressed the belt

loop is also focused on youths balancing their time playing video games

against their other responsibilities.

\"It will make a difference,\" Gailey said, noting they are expected to be very popular awards.

He also said the Scouting program is striving to stay current and remains focused on being prepared in many aspects of life.

According to www.scouting.org. the requirements for the Video Games Belt Loop, which is for Cub Scouts, include:

  1.

Explain why it is important to have a rating system for video games.

Check your video games to be sure they are right for your age.

  2. With an adult, create a schedule for you to do things that include your

chores, homework and video gaming. Do your best to follow this schedule.

  3. Learn to play a new video game that is approved by your parent, guardian or teacher.
