WEBER STATE
TRACK AND FIELD: The Wildcats got a final tune up for next week's 2010 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship competing in the Wildcat Twilight Open Meet on Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Chick Hislop Track & Field Complex at Stewart Stadium. Weber State is hosting the Big Sky championships next week (May 12-15).
There were some solid performances by both the WSU men and women. Coach Dan Walker's men had seven first place finishes. Zach Parry (So.-Taylorsville, Utah) had a big afternoon. He won the hammer throw with a career best toss of 185-00.50 and finished fourth in the shot put with a career best of 51-08.00. His hammer throw mark is the sixth best in WSU school history and is the third best mark in the Big Sky Conference this season.
Chris Struckman (So.-Portland, Ore.) won the triple jump with a career best of 44-05.00 and captured the 100 meters in 11.09 running into a fairly brisk north wind which blew most of the afternoon. He was also part of the winning 4x100 meter relay team as well.
The men also captured first place honors in the discus with Eki Faagai (Sr.-Kanehoe, Hawaii) winning with a toss of 161-09.75. Tyler McBee (Jr.-Beaverton, Ore.) won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.04 and the men also won the 4x400 meter relay.
Other notable marks came from Ethan Anderson (So.-Plain City) who had a three-foot improvement, and career best, in the shot put at 49-07.75. Also in the shot put, Ryan Shelton (So.-Soldotna, Alaska) was second with a toss of 55-00.25. It was his first 55 foot throw since setting the school record of 55-09.00 back on March 3.
"Weather-wise we were expecting a little better day," said Walker. "That affected a little bit of our strategy in some of the running events, so that was a bit disappointing. Zach Parry had a great day and continues to improve each week. It was good to get back on our home track now we need to rest and get ready for the conference meet here next week."
On the women's side, the 4x100 relay team of Ally Dean (Sr.-South Ogden), Kristin Billings (So.-Kaysville) Michaela North (Sr.-Kennewick, Washington) and Camille Lott (Sr.-Kaysville) produced a season-best time of 46.64 to win the event. That is the fifth best mark in the Big Sky Conference this season. North also won the long jump with a leap of 18-09.25. The 4x400 relay also captured first place.
Dottie Vea (Fr.-Salt Lake City) had season, and personal, best marks in the discus (136-10.50) and shot put (38.05.00). Alex Filiaga (Sr.-Ogden) also had a season best of 44-10.25 in the shot put finishing third.
