Boston-area chapel approved

BROOKLINE, Mass. — A new LDS chapel could start taking shape in the Boston area by this summer, according to the Boston Globe.

The Brookline Zoning Board approved the meetinghouse plans at its April 29 meeting over objections by neighbors and some politicians who said the proposed meetinghouse was too big for the lot, which is just more than an acre.

LDS Church officials needed a special permit from the zoning board because the building was taller than local zoning laws allow. Plans called for the building to be 33 feet tall with a 72-foot steeple and underground parking for 150 vehicles, the Boston Globe reported.

The LDS Church bought the property at 603 Boylston St., also known as Route 9, in 2007 and officials have said they need to build the chapel to alleviate overcrowding at other buildings in the Boston area.

Officials representing the church have said they have changed their plans to accommodate concerns by the neighbors, but neighbors and local politicians say the proposed building is still too big for the lot. Church officials have said that construction would ideally start this summer.
