MLB: Get to know a park

Each week we will profile a major league park. Today: Dodger Stadium

Home of the Los Angeles Dodgers

Nickname: Chavez Ravine

Location: Los Angeles

Year opened: 1962

Dimensions: left pole, 330; left field, 385; center field, 395; right field, 385; right pole, 330

Capacity: 56,000

After Brooklyn Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley moved the team to Los Angeles in 1957, he went to find a site for his team's permanent home. He found it in Chavez Ravine, just a short distance from downtown L.A.

Before the park opened in 1962, the Dodgers played in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum — winning a World Series title there in 1959, when they beat the Chicago White Sox.

The privately financed stadium hosted both the Dodgers and the Los Angeles/California Angels for the first four years of its existence. The Dodgers won two World Series titles in those years and two more in the '80s under Tommy Lasorda.

It has a reputation for being one of the cleanest, most well-kept parks in baseball. —Aaron Morton

Players protest law

Given a chance to take part in the 2011 All-Star game at Arizona, Ozzie Guillen insists he won't go.

"I wouldn't do it," the Chicago White Sox manager said Friday. "As a Latin American, it's natural that I have to support our own."

Guillen joined a growing chorus of opposition to Arizona's new law that empowers police to determine a person's immigration status. The state is home to all four major team sports, hosts half the clubs in spring training and holds top events in NASCAR, golf and tennis.
