NBA: Warriors' Stephen Curry disappointed about rookie of the year honor
Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry finished second in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting, 100 points behind the winner, Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans.
The results were released Thursday. Evans received 67 first-place votes, while the Warriors' Curry received 43. Curry finished decisively ahead of Milwaukee point guard Brandon Jennings, who garnered 12 first-place votes.
"He deserves it and had a great year," Curry said of Evans.
Perhaps the deciding factor was Evans' consistency throughout the season. He was dominant from October to April and wound up making history. He finished with averages of 20.1 points, 5.8 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Only three other rookies in NBA history have averaged at least 20-5-5: Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
The last four months of the season, Curry averaged 21.1 points, 6.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds. He had 36 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds against the Los Angeles Clippers, the first 30-10-10 triple-double by a rookie since former Cal star Kevin Johnson did it in 1988 for Phoenix. It was also one of five games for Curry with at least 30 points and 10 assists. Only Jordan and Robertson had that many. No other rookie posted such a game this season.
But Curry couldn't overcome the first two months. He averaged 12.2 points the first 30 games of the season. Plopped into an organization that was full of drama, Curry struggled to fit in and find his outside shot.
"For me," Curry said, "it's a bit of a disappointment because I finished out the year strong and felt like it could go either way. But it's not going to crush me or anything like that. You only get to go for the award once, but I played the best that I could this year and realize that it's just a blot on the big picture of my career."
Curry and Evans were invited to the Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas in July. The minicamp is preparation for August's world championships in Turkey.
Although Curry had said he was looking forward to resting after playing heavy minutes during the season, he happily accepted the invitation. The minicamp could lead to a national team invitation.
Curry also plans to take part in the Las Vegas Summer League with the Warriors before the Team USA camp.
"I will find plenty of time to rest. Can't pass on this opportunity," Curry said. "I am going there with the motivation to make the team and learn from this great experience. The talent level will be at its highest, so hopefully I can add another dimension to the team as a point guard and a shooter.
