WEST VALLEY CITY — Mayor Mike Winder and the City Council have opted to cut one week's worth of their own pay, falling in line with furloughs they required of all other city employees.

One of the city's newest council members, Don Christensen, came up with the idea.

"It seems like we should be willing to take whatever sacrifice we ask our employees to take," Christensen said. "I was pleased Mayor Winder and my colleagues all readily agreed."

In late February, West Valley City required all employees to take a 40-hour furlough by June 30 to help with a $4.5 million shortfall in the city's budget.
