WOMEN'S TENNIS: Junior Evgenia Kryuchkova of the 39th-ranked Utes (16-6, 8-0) was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week, Wednesday. Kryuchkova swept all of her singles and doubles contests this past weekend, including the conference title clinching match.
In Utah's 7-0 blanking of New Mexico, Kryuchkova downed Kristin Eggleston, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles position after she and partner Lisa Johnson had clinched the doubles point for the Utes from the No. 3 spot by defeating Michaela Oldani and Eggleston, 8-0.
In Utah's 4-3 win over TCU Kryuchkova earned the match clinching point by defeating Katariina Tuohimaa in three-sets (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at the No. 2 singles position. The Utes, with their win over the Horned Frogs, finished conference play undefeated and claimed the regular season conference title. Earlier in the match Kryuchkova and Johnson secured the doubles point for the Utes by topping Idunn Hertzberg and Shalini Sahoo, 9-7, in a come-from-behind win.
The Zhukovsky, Russia, native finished regular season conference play with a perfect 8-0 singles record. She is on a 13-0 run having not lost a match since late February.
Kryuchkova and the rest of the Ute squad head into the MWC Championship as the No. 1 seed. The tournament takes place April 28-May 1 in Las Vegas.
