Centerville looking for green waste subscribers

CENTERVILLE — For Centerville residents with no space to dispose of yard waste, the city is implementing a curbside green waste program.

Similar to the city's curbside recycling program, the green waste program will provide a specific can for yard waste, grass clippings, leaves and branches.

Within the next week, the city will send a notice to residents asking for subscribers to participate in the $5.50-a-month program. The city needs at least 20 percent of the city's homes — about 750 — to make the program feasible.

Assistant city manager Blaine Lutz said the mailer will be finalized Thursday and sent to a printer.

During a public hearing in March, the City Council only heard favorable comments from residents. Residents who currently have two regular garbage cans pay $8.50 a month for their second can and would realize a savings each month if they join the green waste program.

"There's no down side to this, at all," Centerville Mayor Ron Russell said.

The green waste will be hauled to the Layton landfill, owned by the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District, where it will be composted and sold. A similar program is under way in Fruit Heights.
