PROVO — A man charged with attempted rape of a woman on the Provo River Trail has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.
Michael Workman, 26, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Tuesday in 4th District Court to kidnapping and aggravated assault. He had been charged with aggravated kidnapping and attempted rape in connection with an October assault in which he held a chemical-soaked cloth over a woman's mouth.
Judge Fred Howard ordered that the Utah State Hospital conduct an evaluation of Workman's mental health issues before he is sentenced to ensure that he understands the charges. He will remain in custody while that is done.
