SALT LAKE CITY — The president of the Colorado Rockies baseball team was found dead Tuesday in a hotel room at the Grand America, 555 S. Main.

Keli McGregor was in Salt Lake City on a promotional trip for the Rockies. After co-workers could not reach him, they contacted the hotel staff. When employees opened the door just after 9 a.m. and discovered him, they called police, said Salt Lake police detective Rick Wall.

Paramedics were called and attempted to revive McGregor but were unsuccessful, Wall said. He did not know Tuesday where in the room McGregor's body was found.

There were no signs of foul play, and the death is not considered suspicious, Wall said. McGregor's body was turned over to the medical examiner.

"Words cannot describe the level of shock and disbelief that we all are feeling this morning at the loss of Keli," Rockies Chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort said. "Our thoughts, our prayers are with Lori and the entire family as we all try to cope and understand how such a tragic loss could occur with such a wonderful man."

McGregor, 48, of Golden, Colo., has been with the Rockies since 1993. He was named team president in 2001. He leaves behind a wife, three daughters and one son.

McGregor previously worked as associate athletic director at the University of Arkansas. Prior to that, he coached football at the University of Florida for two seasons, according to a Colorado Rockies website.

A two-time All-American tight end at Colorado State, McGregor was drafted by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 1985 NFL draft. He played for Denver, Indianapolis and Seattle before retiring.

McGregor was in Salt Lake City on an annual business trip along with Monfort and Rockies Executive Vice President Greg Feasel.
