BIKES WILL BE GIVEN TO KIDS
Bikes for Kids Utah, a nonprofit organization, will give 1,000 new bicycles to pre-qualified, underprivileged second-grade students at its fifth annual giveaway event on Saturday, May 8, at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
During the giveaway event, the recipients will learn about bike safety and nutrition. Bikes for Kids Utah will also host a series of fundraising bicycle rides to help generate the financial support needed to purchase the bikes. The bike recipients will receive helmets, bike locks and T-shirts.
"When you give children bikes, something inside of them lights up," said Debbie Reid, Bikes for Kids Utah's founder and president. "The giveaway is a huge day for these young people; they become bike owners, and their world opens up to the joy and freedom of cycling."
The bicycles will be given away at the Intermountain Medical Center parking lot, 5121 South Cottonwood St. in Murray, starting at 9:30 a.m. on May 8, with Bikes for Kids Utah staff and volunteers delivering bikes to a new group of kids every half hour. This year, the children will receive Bikes for Kids Utah branded bikes that will help make the community more aware of the Bikes for Kids Utah cause.
Fundraising rides to benefit Bikes for Kids Utah will begin at 8 a.m. at Intermountain Medical Center and end at their starting point. Event registration costs between $10 and $30, depending on the rides, which range from 5K to 100K in length. Refreshments will be available at various rest stops along each bike route.
