SOUTHERN UTAH
TRACK AND FIELD: The Thunderbids enjoyed one of their most successful meets of the season as the Thunderbirds wrapped up competition at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday night in Claremont, Calif. SUU tallied 21 top-five finishes on the women's side and nine top-five finishes on the men's side, including a new school record in the women's 4x400-meter relay.
Christina Day began the day for the sprinters with a pair of top-ten finishes in the women's with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meters (12.25) and a ninth-place finish in the 200-meters with a time of 24.96. Both times marked new team bests on the season.
Chelsey Allen continued the trend of new season bests with a 56.37 fifth-place finish in the women's 400-meters. Allen ran the second leg of the women's 4x400-meter relay team that posted the best result of the afternoon with a school-record time of 3:44.53, beating the previous school record by more than two seconds. Allen also ran the anchor leg of the women's 4x100-meter relay team that finished first with a time of 46.69.
Sharla Manuele continued her strong season, finishing third in the women's 800-meters (2:12.92) and as the first collegiate runner in the women's 1,500-meters with a time of 4:27.15.
True freshman Shaye Maurer improved her season-best time in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 13.92. The time is only two-tenths off the school record and two-tenths faster than her previous season best. Kylie Frandsen also performed well in the hurdles, finishing second in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.36.
Steffi Minson looked to be back in good form after coming back from a 2009 injury with a first-place time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:55.97.
In the field events, Jacki Stoddard, Maurer and Leah Walters each cleared the ball at five feet three inches, finishing tied for third and fifth, respectively. Cheyenne Thatcher's jump of 18 feet 11.75 inches was good enough for first place in that event and is the second-best mark in school history.
Southern Utah throwers finished first through third in the women's shot put with Ashley Morrison (45-4.25), Adrienne Hill (44-0.75) and Whitney Singleton (42-6) rounding out the top spots. Hill finished just behind teammate Kristi Koplin in the women's discus with a third and second-place finishing mark of 146 feet two inches and 152 feet one inch, respectively.
