Ken Sanders Rare Books, 268 S. 200 East, will host a reading and book signing by Jacob Paul, author of "Sarah/Sara," April 15, 7 p.m. (801-521-3819).

The King's English Bookshop, 1511 S. 1500 East, hosts professor Wilfred Samuels, and the University of Utah will present author Martha Southgate as part of the "Writers Like Us: Contemporary African American Writers" series. Southgate will speak and sign copies of her books on April 12, 7 p.m.; author Howard Frank Mosher presents his epic Civil War tale "Walking to Gatlinburg," April 13, 7 p.m. (801-484-9100).

Benchmark Books, 3269 S. Main, Ste. 250, will host a reading and book signing by Mark L. Staker, author of "Hearken, O Ye People: The Historical Setting of Joseph Smith's Ohio Revelation," April 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (801-486-3111)

The Salt Lake Community College Writing Center will host a workshop on "Writing for Change: Civic Writing." Learn the techniques of civic writing, such as letters to editors and public officials. Come with a concern; stay to write a letter with the help of CWC writing coaches. The workshop will be held April 17, 6-9 p.m., at the Chapman Library, 577 S. 900 West. There is no cost; however, registration is required online at www.slcc.edu/cwc or by calling 801-957-4992.

Lifelong Learning at the U. is sponsoring a class on storytelling on Thursdays, April 14-May 6, 7-8:30 p.m. Registration is required. Tuition is $69.
