WEST BOUNTIFUL — By June or July, West Bountiful could be the last city in southern Davis County to have a curbside recycling program.
Since 2008, Woods Cross, Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington and North Salt Lake have begun programs.
The West Bountiful City Council voted 4-0 Tuesday night to move forward with the creation of an optional curbside program.
The program would cost residents $5 per month, but if more than 1,200, or 80 percent of homes, in the city participate, the rate will be $4.50 per month, said Craig Howe, city administrator.
Howe said city officials soon will send a mailer to residents that will tell them how to opt out of the program within three months. Otherwise, they will be included in the program.
"We're excited about it," Howe said. "We think it will be a good thing."
The program will be biweekly on residents' normal trash day. The program is designed for paper, plastic and metals. Residents may take their yard waste, or green waste, to the Bountiful landfill.
Howe said recycling can help preserve the life of the Layton landfill, which is owned by the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District. The landfill has about 13 years of storage life remaining.
If Davis County garbage has to be trucked to a landfill away from the Wasatch Front someday, garbage collection would be far more expensive, Howe said.
