SOCCER: In a closed scrimmage to the public, the BYU Cougars played Real Salt Lake in a physical game Wednesday morning at Xango Field in Lehi. The Cougars played tough but lost 6-0.

The scoring started early with goals in the third and eight minutes from Fabian Espindola who capitalized on a misplayed ball and connected a strike from the left flank.

BYU will play its first home spring exhibition game Friday, April 9 against the Dixie State Red Storm at 7 p.m.

A dance party hosted by the team will happen at 9:30 p.m. after the game in the annex of the Smith Fieldhouse. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for children and students with a valid ID. A single ticket works for both.

BYU is 2-1-1 in spring preseason play. The Cougars defeated the Mesa State Mavericks twice on March 20, with scores of 3-0 and 2-1. BJ Pugmire ('13), Zach DeFrancis ('16), and Brady Marshall ('56) scored in the first game. On March 27 BYU tied the UNLV Rebels 0-0.

The Cougars begin the PDL regular season May 8 at the Orange County Blue Star before returning to Provo for its first home against the Los Angeles Legends on May 21.

Jordan Roylance led the Red Storm in goals (11), points (23), shots (39), shots on goal (20) and game winners (4) during the 2009 season.

TENNIS: With two conference wins under its belt, the No. 34 BYU men's tennis team will travel to Texas this week to play the last nonconference contest of the season and later take on No. 56 TCU. The Cougars will face SMU Friday at 1 p.m. and the Horned Frogs Saturday at 10 a.m.

"Our simple goal is to come back with two wins," BYU coach Brad Pearce said. "Both of these matches are both important for us."

BYU improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 6-1 defeat of Air Force and a 5-2 win over New Mexico. The Cougars stand at 17-4 overall, the first time the team has reached the 17-win mark since 2005.

Thomas Shubert was honored as MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performances over the weekend. It was BYU's seventh honor this season. BYU's Kristina Doerr shared the MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Week recognition with Utah's Anastasia Putilina.

Shubert, who hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, went a combined 4-0 last week to lead 32nd-ranked BYU to a 2-0 record against Air Force and New Mexico. Doerr, a product of Alpine, Utah, went a combined 4-0 last week to help BYU to a 1-1 record against No. 74 San Diego State (W, 5-2) and No. 29 UNLV (L, 3-4).
