Springville to honor students

SPRINGVILLE — City leaders will recognize sixth graders during the first Springville City Council meeting of each month.

The initiative is part of an effort by the city to keep youth away from drugs and other problem behavior. It is part of the city's Communities That Care program.

An earlier effort by the group to encourage residents to turn in a card when they saw a student doing a good deed was unsuccessful, said Suzy Young, the program's director. Only one card was turned in, and that one didn't have a name on it, Young said.

So now Young is working with Springville Junior High School PTA president Ann Bartholomew to honor students who normally don't get recognition or youth who may be at risk. Each month, teachers at the six elementary schools in Springville will nominate a sixth-grade student for recognition.

Additionally, the students will receive a "goody bag" from local businesses, Bartholomew said.

Older students will get their recognition during the second City Council meeting of the month. The plan is modeled after a similar program in Tooele, Young said.
