SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Agriculture & Food has $285,000 available to award in grants for "speciality crops."

Speciality crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops, including floriculture.

The money comes from the U.S. Farm Bill, which authorizes the U.S. Department of Agriculture to partner with states to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crop producers.

Growers, producer groups and associations, state and local government, colleges and universities, and other specialty crop stakeholders are eligible to apply for a grant. Applicants must demonstrate measurable benefits for the specialty crop industry and must assist more than just a single producer or company.

New speciality crop growers or socially disadvantaged farmers are encouraged to apply. Matching funds are not required but are strongly encouraged.

Grant proposals are due to the Department of Agriculture & Food on June 18. Winning proposals will be announced in September, and checks will be sent in November.

Application information and forms are available at ag.utah.gov or at 801-538-4931.

For more information on the program, lists of eligible products and the federal requirements, go to the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service at www.ams.usda.gov/scbg.
