The winners and the losers

Loser: It wasn't a good week for powerful people taking responsibility in Utah courtrooms. In one instance, a former West Jordan police officer tried to argue, through his attorney, that he thought the distraught and suicidal woman he was called to assist was actually consenting to have sex with him before going to the hospital. A puzzled judge could only say, "Under any circumstances, why would he do what he did? It is so wrong." Then there was disgraced former state Senate majority leader Sheldon Killpack, who tried to argue that he should have his driver's license restored to him. The Driver License Division suspended it until August 2011 after Killpack was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk. A blood test after his arrest showed his blood alcohol level at 0.11. The legal limit is 0.8. C'mon guys, man up.

Winner: It was, however, a good week for dinosaurs in Utah. Scientists confirmed that the fossilized remains of a creature found in the red rock area of southeastern Utah is a new species of the ancient creatures. Its bones were referred to by Navajos as the "sand desert monster." Unfortunately, this dinosaur was a plant eater. In Utah, dinosaurs can mean big business, from tourists who come here to explore the landscape and visit museums, to motion pictures filmed on location. But the more dangerous meat eaters tend to bring in the best profits.

Winner: Many Utahns may be less than thrilled over the new federal health care reform law, but one little-publicized aspect of it should make them happy. The law will add a 10 percent tax onto tanning services. Beginning July 1, tanning salons will have to begin charging the tax. It isn't likely to drive them out of business, but it is a step in the right direction. With skin cancer becoming an increasingly pervasive problem in the United States, Americans should be worried about a business that deliberately exposes primarily young people to harmful rays, all in the name of vanity.
