At Cedar City, Southern Utah freshmen Caitlin Kennedy and Alyssa Click gave the T-Birds a boost out of the gate, capturing individual titles on vault and bars as SUU posted a 195.950-195.350 victory over BYU on Monday night.
The night was punctuated with a ceremony honoring the 2010 SUU gymnastics senior class composed of Bailey Baker, Melissa Johnson, Lindsey Schultz and Elise Wheeler.
"This meet was great, I love where the team is at right now," SUU head coach Scott Bauman said. "It was an emotional meet for our girls, especially the seniors, and I think that played a part in how close things were."
Wheeler's score of 39.400 in the all-around marked her 10th all-around title of the season.
Southern Utah will now look to secure its first-ever conference title in gymnastics during its next meet when the Thunderbirds take part in the Western Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night.
