High school basketball: Bingham guard drills dramatic game-winner for 5A in All-Star game
SANDY — Bingham High bowed out of the 5A basketball playoffs much earlier than Shad Sommerville expected this year. But on Friday night, the senior point guard made amends on a much smaller scale — in very dramatic fashion nonetheless.
Sommerville spun around a defender at midcourt and then buried a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead the 5A All-Stars to a dramatic 98-95 victory over the 4A All-Stars at Jordan High School.
"It's really fun to come out here and play and to hit that shot, but it really doesn't compare to the goals we set to take state all year long," said Sommerville. "Even though we lost, I have no regrets."
Sommerville was one of four players to score in double figures for the 5A All-Stars, finishing with 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Despite Sommerville's heroics, Copper Hills' big man, Steven Larson, was the star of the game for 5A, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The 4A All-Stars led by as many as nine points late in the fourth quarter, but the 5A squad ended the game on a 17-5 run to steal the victory.
"At the end, we're all competitive and we all want to win," said Sommerville.
Midway through the fourth quarter, it appeared the 4A All-Stars had pulled away for good. Down 81-80 following a 3-pointer by Brighton's Sam Wunderli, the 4A All-Stars scored 10 straight points over the next two minutes to open up a 90-81 lead with 3:22 remaining on a dunk by Provo's Kyle Collinsworth.
Class 5A coach Jim Barker quickly called a timeout and mixed up his lineup. Keeping with the theme of the all-star game, the 4A All-Stars didn't try and protect the lead and continued to attack the basket. Several missed shots opened the door for the 5A team, which rallied for the win.
It was a tight game throughout, with seven ties and 19 lead changes.
Lone Peak's Tannon Pederson added 16 points for the 5A All-Stars, while Wunderli chipped in with 10.
Seven different players scored in double figures for the 4A All-Stars, led by 15 points from Timpview's Eli Robison.
"It's great just getting to know all these kids; you play against them all year, and you're so serious in those games because they mean something. When you come out here and get to know them, they're great kids — all of them," said Sommerville.
