MEN'S GOLF: Jeff Evans shot his best round of the tournament, a par 72, on Tuesday to move up six spots and finish in a tie for 11th place at South Dakota State's Jackrabbit Invitational golf tournament at Primm, Nev. The Thunderbirds dropped three spots to finish 12th as a team, however.
Evans fired back-to-back rounds of 75 on Monday for a share of 17th place, but his even-par round over the 7,131-yard Desert Course at Primm Valley Golf Club moved him into a three-way tie with San Diego State's Parker Evans and UMKC's Korbin Kuehn at 6-over-par 222. The trio finished 15 shots off the pace of Nebraska's Brandon Crick (207) but just seven shots out of third place.
Nebraska, the only team to finish under par, ran away with the team title at 4-under 860, 15 shots better than second-place Arkansas State, which finished at 875. SUU fired a final-round 311 to finish at 926.
SUU's Jordan Orth, who was in a tie for 20th place at 151 after Monday's first two rounds, faltered on Tuesday, shooting an 82, but still finished second among the Thunderbirds entires in 57th place at 233. Brad Millard shot his best round of the tournament, a 74, on Tuesday to finish at 234 and in 62nd, while Doug Fowles finished 69th at 237 after a final-round 83 and Justin Bateman — who was competing in his first tournament as a member of the team — placed 89th at 257 after another 83.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Jamie Coking shot a 23-over-par 239 to finish in a tie for 49th place and lead Southern Utah's women to a 13th-place finish at South Dakota State's Jackrabbit Invitational golf tournament Tuesday at Primm, Nev.
Coking shot her second straight round of 79 to finish right where she began the day, while Sadie Palmer, who struggled with rounds of 83 and 88 on Monday, shot a 73 on Tuesday to move up 15 spots on the scoreboard and finish second among the Thunderbirds at 244 and in 61st place.
Kacy Buckner also shot her best round of the tournament, a 79, Tuesday to finish third among the T-Birds' players. Buckner finished at 245 over the 6,945-yard, par-71 Primm Valley Lakes Course to finish all alone in 65th
place. Rounding out SUU's entries, Morgan Kerber finished 74th at 254, while Mikayla Williamson was 82nd at 267. Southern Utah's Brittany Edwards, playing as an individual, finished tied with Kerber in 74th at 254.
The Thunderbirds finished at 980, well off the pace of team champion Oral Roberts, which shot a 28-over-par 892 to edge Missouri State by two strokes and Drake by four.
