OREM — Stephen Sandstrom will seek re-election as a Republican candidate for Utah House District 58, which covers north Orem, Lindon and southeast Pleasant Grove.
A three-term Orem city councilman prior to his election to the state Legislature in 2006, Sandstrom has promised to stand for the conservative values of his constituents.
"It's been my pleasure to continue advocating for the conservative causes and traditional values of my district," he said.
Sandstrom said he is particularly proud of the funding allocated this session to build the new science building at Utah Valley University. He also worked to pass legislation that saves schools millions of dollars on impact fees.
"It's a way to help alleviate an expense and help more money go to educating our children," he said. "My only disappointment this session is our challenging economic environment has made it difficult to be as supportive of education as I'd like."
Sandstrom is being challenged for the second time by Steven Baugh, a BYU education professor and former superintendent of the Alpine School District. In 2009, Sandstrom receive 60 percent of the vote.
Sandstrom, owner of an architectural firm, is a lifelong resident of Orem, where he lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children.
