Kane Wilson, who was anticipated to be No. 2 on the depth chart behind senior Diondre Borel this spring, has left the Utah State football team.
After redshirting last season, Wilson was expected to get some playing time this year as the Aggies prepared for the post-Borel future. But an offseason of controversy led to a suspension from the team after he was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Reached by text message Friday morning by the Deseret News, Wilson did not want to discuss his decision to leave the team.
"No comment," was his reply when asked about the news.
USU issued this statement Friday morning:
"Utah State football head coach Gary Andersen announced Friday that redshirt-freshman quarterback Kane Wilson has left the program.
Wilson, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif. (El Dorado HS), is a 6'4", 215-pound quarterback who redshirted the 2009 season. Last month, Wilson was suspended for a violation of team rules."
Wilson's departure from the team leaves senior Jeff Fischer as the primary backup with incoming freshmen Jeremy Higgins (Hawaii) and Alex Hart (Jordan High) filling out the depth chart.
Fischer played in only one game last year, throwing no passes but rushing four times for 8 yards.
