BYU basketball: Jimmer Fredette named third-team All-American, player of year for District 8

PROVO — Brigham Young junior guard Jimmer Fredette was named third-team All-American on Tuesday by the Sporting News, and also received the U.S. Basketball Writers Association player of the year award for District 8.

District 8 includes Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

The awards go with the honor Fredette received on Monday when he was named to the Mountain West Conference All-Conference first team.

Fredette's teammate, senior guard Jackson Emery, was also selected by the USBWA as a first-team All-District 8 player. Emery was a second-team All-MWC selection and was named to the conference's All-Defensive team.

Utah State's Jared Quayle and Weber State's Damian Lillard were also named to the first-team All-District 8. From the MWC, New Mexico's Darington Hobson and Roman Martinez, and UNLV's Tre'Von Willis were All-District 8 selections. From the Western Athletic Conference, Nevada's Luke Babbitt and New Mexico State's Jahman Young earned All-District 8 honors.

Hobson, the MWC player of the year, also joins Fredette on the third-team All-American list.

Fredette, a 6-foot-2 junior, is averaging 20.6 points and 4.7 assists while shooting .465 from the field, .472 from three and .881 from the free throw line.

The Glens Falls, N.Y., native has scored 33-plus points five times and 20-plus points 18 times. He burst onto the national scene when he posted BYU records of 49 points and nine threes at Arizona while adding nine assists and seven boards in leading the Cougars to a 99-69 win against the Wildcats. Fredette also scored 36 points at home against rival Utah, a BYU record for points against the Utes.

This season Fredette was selected as the MWC player of the week five times. He is a national player of the year candidate, having been named a Naismith Trophy Midseason Candidate, a Wooden Trophy Candidate and an Oscar Robertson Trophy finalist.
