Kam Roundy, Bryce Valley

KAM ROUNDY, Bryce Valley, boys basketball

This senior guard capped a stellar prep career by helping to lead the Mustangs to their first basketball state championship in school history last weekend.

Roundy, who previously won two state titles at Escalante before his family moved to Bryce Valley, simply did whatever was needed for the Mustangs — whether it was guarding the opposing team's best player or making clutch shots at the other end of the floor.

"He's the heart and soul of the team," said coach Eric Jessen. "He's the one that has helped us buy into playing harder defense and helped the kids along with that and got them to believe in that. He's a big asset."

That much was obvious during the fourth quarter of Bryce Valley's championship-game win over Piute, as Roundy made a number of huge plays at both ends of the floor to lead the Mustangs to the 1A title.

NICOLE HANSEN, Sky View, girls basketball

This senior had to change positions for the Bobcats, and then help her team adapt to losing one of their best outside shooters to an injury.

"She's as fast, physical and as smart as any player we've had," said Sky View head coach Paul Hansen, who is also her father. "She's been unselfish, and she's just very athletic and strong."

An honor student who maintains a 3.8 GPA, Hansen is also a region tennis champion and varsity softball player. The three-year starter was also the Deseret News Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. She loves photography and spear-headed her team's cancer awareness project. She helped the Bobcats to the quarterfinals and averaged 12.2 points per game this season. She earned 166 assists this season.

"She likes to be with people," said coach Hansen. "She's very well-rounded."
