SPANISH FORK — One person is dead and another in critical condition after a head-on crash between a semitrailer full of mattresses and a Ford F-150 pickup truck in Spanish Fork Canyon at approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck, 24-year-old Trent Walker, was headed north on state Route 89. When the 24-year-old pulled his car into the southbound lane to try to pass another vehicle, he hit the semitrailer head-on.
Officers say Walker died on the scene. The semitrailer's driver, 45-year-old Slobodan Spanovic, was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition. He was released from the hospital Saturday evening.
The road was closed until officers could clear the oil from the vehicles and gather crash evidence.
Police say Spanovic was wearing a seat belt but are unsure whether Walker was. No other people were involved in the crash.
