Utah Legislature: Lawmakers tout 'Statue of Responsibility' for West Coast
SALT LAKE CITY — A small model of a planned "Statue of Responsibility" was unveiled Friday as lawmakers passed a resolution honoring the Utah-based Statue of Responsibility Foundation and Utah sculptor Gary Price, who designed the statue.
Lawmakers promoted Utah as the "birth place of the Statue of Responsibility," a project that aims to build a 300-foot companion to the Statue of Liberty on the West Coast.
The foundation has been raising money for years and has yet to secure a location to build the statue, although several major cities in California are the frontrunners.
The resolution's sponsor, Rep. Mike Morley, R-Spanish Fork, said in order to ensure freedom, "liberty must be embraced with responsibility."
To emphasize this sentiment, supporters want a Statue of Responsibility, designed as two hands entwined, to stand on the West Coast as the Statue of Liberty does on the East Coast.
Senate President Mike Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, said the proposed statue symbolizes working together.
"To me, this says we're helping one another, someone is reaching down to lift someone up," he said.
