Joseph Fiennes, left, and John Cho star in "FlashForward," a science-fiction television series that is new to DVD.
Ron Tom, ABC
These new-to-DVD television programs are led by a new sci-fi series, as well as follow-up seasons to several vintage favorites.
"FlashForward: Part One, Season One" (ABC, 2009, two discs, $29.99). If you want to catch up before this show resumes next month, here's your chance. The sci-fi premise has everyone on the planet temporarily losing consciousness at the same moment, each having a vision of personal events that will occur over the next few months.
Is it some kind of sinister plot? The show follows a team of FBI agents as they attempt to unravel the mystery, and time is also spent exploring how knowledge of the near future affects human behavior.
This is an intriguing premise that, hopefully, won't go haywire, ?la "Lost." The ensemble cast is led by Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Dominic Monaghan and Courtney B. Vance.
Extras: widescreen, 10 episodes, featurettes, trailers
"Night Court: The Complete Third Season" (Warner, 1985-86, three discs, $29.98). Harry Anderson heads the comic cast of this often hilarious sitcom about a night court judge who loves magic and Mel Torme, and who must contend with the eccentrics who come into his courtroom each night. John Larroquette, Markie Post, Richard Moll, Charles Robinson and Florence Halop costar.
Extras: full frame, 22 episodes
"My Three Sons: The Second Season, Volume One" (CBS/Paramount, 1961-62, three discs, b/w, $42.99). Widower Steve Douglas (Fred MacMurray) and his grumpy father-in-law (William Frawley) attempt to rein in the title characters (Tim Considine, Don Grady and Stanley Livingston) in this long-running sitcom. Soft but amusing, with appealing players.
Extras: full frame, 18 episodes, ad spots, trailers
"Adam-12: Season Four" (Shout! 1971-72, four discs, $34.97). Martin Milner and Kent McCord catch bad guys and help people in peril in this matter-of-fact police procedural, sometimes with several short stories in one episode. Guests this season include Lindsay Wagner, Ed Begley Jr., Stubby Kaye, Dick Clark, and Robert Conrad in a crossover episode from his short-lived series "The D.A."
Extras: full frame, 24 episodes
"Midsomer Murders: Set 14" (Acorn, 2007, four discs, $49.99). Four more sterling murder mysteries in rural England, including one in which Inspector Barnaby (the stalwart John Nettles) is framed! Great players, very good writing and a solid sense of humor keep this one from growing stale.
