FARMINGTON — Registration for the 12th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival begins at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Registration can be made online at www.greatsaltlakebirdfest.com or by calling 801-451-3278.
The festival runs May 13-17, with many birding field trips leaving from the Legacy Events Center, formerly the Davis County Fair Park, located at 151 S. 1100 West in Farmington. Guided birding trips will be available all over the Wasatch Front, and they fill up quickly.
Registration is required for the field trips and for author Terry Tempest Williams' keynote address during the Dutch oven dinner May 15.
The festival's program can be downloaded from the Web site.
May 14-15 programs at the Legacy Events Center include workshops, artists, booths, vendors and food for people of all ages and birding experience.
This year's spotlight bird is the burrowing owl.
All Utah students in grades K-12 are invited to draw a color picture of an adult male western tanager for the festival art contest. Students may use bird field guides or other printed material, as well as the Internet, to identify this bird and gather ideas on how to draw their art. The drawing must be the student's own original creation and should not be copied or traced from any published source.
Complete rules are also available on the Web site. The deadline for submitting art is 5 p.m. April 1.
