Utah teen dies from injuries in Idaho accident
HAZELTON, Idaho — A teenage boy from Utah died from injuries suffered in a rollover on I-84 Monday.
Two other Utahns who were in the car are in serious condition, and two others suffered minor injuries.
The incident began when the driver of a 2008 Chevy Cobalt traveling east on I-84 near Hazelton, Idaho, fell asleep at the wheel about 9:45 a.m., causing the vehicle to veer off the road before the driver awoke and overcorrected, Idaho State Police reported.
The vehicle rolled, ejecting the three passengers in the rear seat who weren't wearing seat belts. They were transported to Minidoka Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Eaity Emich, 17, was later flown to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise where he died. Bennett Barry, 22, and 9-year-old Keio Takky remained in serious condition Monday night.
The driver, 20-year-old Rex Sanasan of Clinton, and front-seat passenger Kevin Elimo, 17, were wearing seat belts. They were transported to a hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho, with non-critical injuries.
Eastbound lanes on I-84 were shut down for about 3-4 hours.
The rollover is still under investigation, but police have ruled out alcohol as a factor.
Police want to remind people to wear their seat belts and pull over if they feel tired.
