HOLLADAY — SWAT teams surrounded the house of a suicidal man who died from what appears to be a gunshot wound Monday.
Unified Police officers responded to a call of a suicidal man near 1700 E. Meadowmoor Drive (4995 South) just after 6 p.m. and managed to talk to the man inside the residence before he fired shots at officers.
Officers fired back, and the man, believed to be 54 years old, retreated to a back bedroom in the house. SWAT teams were called and evacuated neighbors, said Unified Police Lt. Don Hutson.
Police eventually were able to approach the area where the man had barricaded himself, and they found him dead with a handgun nearby. Hutson said the man appears to have died from a gunshot wound, but it's unclear whether it was self-inflicted or came from a police weapon.
Officers who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure.
