MURRAY — An 81-year-old man accused of sexually abusing a young girl who stopped by to deliver cookies has been arrested.
The incident happened Saturday in the area of 100 West and 6000 South. A 10-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother went to a neighbor's house to deliver cookies, said Murray police detective Kenny Bass. While at the house, the children decided to also give some cookies to an elderly man who lived in the basement apartment.
Once inside the apartment, and while the brother wasn't looking, the man "forced (the girl) into a corner between the wall and couch" and abused her, court documents state.
The girl told her parents what had happened as soon as she got home, Bass said. The man was questioned and arrested that same day.
The man lives by himself in the apartment. As of Wednesday, there was no evidence to suggest there were possible other victims, Bass said.
Jay Marvin Smith was charged Tuesday, his birthday, in 3rd District Court with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.
