State men's roundup: Southern Utah, Utah Valley both beaten on the road
INDIANAPOLIS — Robert Glenn scored 28 points and Alex Young added 21 as IUPUI defeated Southern Utah 77-61 in Summit League men's basketball action Saturday night.
Glenn, a senior playing in his final home game, also had a team-high six rebounds for IUPUI (20-9, 13-3), which clinched a tie for second in the Summit League.
The score was 33-33 at the half, but the Jaguars began the second half with a 21-3 run to put the game out of reach.
Leroy Nobles added 12 points for IUPUI and John Ashworth had eight assists.
Davis Baker was the only player in double figures for Southern Utah (6-21, 2-14) with 21 points. He also had a game-high seven rebounds.
The Thunderbirds made 57 percent of their shots in the game, but committed 26 turnovers that led to 22 IUPUI points.
"We had that (second half) run where we turned the ball over for about nine minutes, then we played well the rest of the way. But by that time, we had dug ourselves too deep a hole," SUU coach Roger Reid said. "I think that's been the trademark of this team. We play minutes of good basketball, play very well, but we lose it for awhile and don't play consistently.
"They do that very well, pressure your ball-handlers and get steals. Against a good basketball team, you just can't turn it over like that because more often than not it turns into three points on the other end like it did tonight."
NORTH DAKOTA 74, UTAH VALLEY 58: At Grand Forks, N.D., Travis Bledsoe scored 20 points, surpassing 1,000 for his career, in North Dakota's win. Nick Haugen added 14 points and Derek Benter 12 for the Fighting Sioux (7-18, 4-3 Great West).
Jordan Swarbrick led the Wolverines (11-15, 4-6) with 21 points and Tyray Petty had 15.
"Jordan and Tyray gave us inspired efforts and Kevin Woods tried to spark us the best he could, but we couldn't find enough defensive stops in the second half," UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "North Dakota came out of the locker room in the second half and knocked down some shots and we were simply unable get them under control."
EASTERN UTAH 70, SLCC 65: At Price, Utah, the College of Eastern Utah pulled out a hard-fought Scenic West Conference victory over Salt Lake Community College (21-7, 12-6 SWAC).
John Hayward-Mayhew led SLCC with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting and Darrian Norris finished with 18 points. Salt Lake shot 94 percent from the foul line.
SLCC will close out the regular season with a game against Snow College on Feb. 25 in Ephraim and Feb. 27 at Bruin Arena.
