FAIRFIELD — Camp Floyd is offering summer history day camps for children ages 8 to 11 this summer. Youths can experience pre-Civil War military life during a three-day session.
"On the first day, they're recruited into the Army and taught how to be a soldier," said Mark Trotter, Camp Floyd park manager. "The second day, they get orders to march to Utah, put down a rebellion and establish Camp Floyd."
Participants learn how to march, set up camp and fire an 1860s period firearm. After two days of training and marching, the experience culminates with a military battle between Union and Confederate forces.
Each of the five camp sessions accepts 24 youths with a $75 camp fee per person. Registration applications are available at stateparks.utah.gov/camp_floyd/history_camp.
