 Wallace Stegner Center presents a talk and book signing by George Schaller, Feb. 23, 7 p.m., at Salt Lake Main Library, 210 E. 400 South (801-585-3440).

 Ken Sanders Rare Books will host a reading by poets Paul Swenson and Lin Ostler, Feb. 25, 7 p.m., at 268 S. 200 East (801-521-3819).

 The Salt Lake County Library is pleased to partner with the Utah Grizzlies for the annual Griz Kids Winter Reading Program. Children ages 5-14 are encouraged to stop into any Salt Lake County Library and pick up a winter reading record to track their progress now through the end of March. Kids who complete the reading record will receive a prize and a voucher good for a free ticket to an upcoming Grizzlies game.

 Christian Poets Guild is sponsoring a contest with a $1,000 grand prize. Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by guild contest director Dr. Jack Carroll. The contest is free to enter and open to poets of any age. Fifty prizes totaling more than $5,000 will be awarded. Entries must be received by Feb. 28 and may be submitted by mail to 7308 Heritage Drive, Mount Vernon, IN 47620 or at www.freecontest.com.

Those sending entries should include their name and address on the same page as the poem. A winners list will be sent to all entrants.

 The Salt Lake Community College Writing Center will host a workshop on "Writing for Change: Civic Writing." Learn the techniques of civic writing, such as letters to editors and to public officials. Come with a concern; stay to write a letter with the help of CWC writing coaches. The workshop will be held March 16 at the Sprague Library and April 17 at the Chapman Library. The workshops will take place from 6-9 p.m. both days. There is no cost; however, registration is required online at www.slcc.edu/cwc or by calling 801-957-4992.
