40 sports approved for Utah stakes

Sports from basketball and softball to chess and checkers — 40 in all — are on the list of activities approved for wards and stakes in the Utah Area of the LDS Church.

The entire list is available in the area sports committee's February newsletter, which can be viewed online at MormonTimes.com in the "Special features" section near the bottom of the Web site's home page.

Included in this month's newsletter is a story of youths on a Saturday morning participating both in church sports and doing baptisms in the temple, and a question-and-answer exchange with Leonard Mecham, Utah Area North sports director.

The area sports calendars also are available online. Among the February events is a young single adult basketball tournament for the Salt Lake area.

Danish research classes Feb. 20

SALT LAKE CITY — Delving into Denmark research will be the topic of the all-day class series Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 p.m. to 3:45 a.m. at the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City. Classes include using census, church and probate records and Internet research.

Church history focus of symposium

PROVO — The annual Church History Symposium will be Friday, Feb. 26, at BYU and is 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the BYU Conference Center. The theme is "A Firm Foundation" and will focus on the history of the administration and organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Speakers include Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone, emeritus member of the Quorum of the Seventy, Edward L. Kimball, author of "Lengthen Your Stride: The Presidency of Spencer W. Kimball," and Richard L. Bushman, author of "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling." The symposium also features other historians such as Susan Easton Black, Ronald Walker, Thomas G. Alexander and Richard E. Bennett. Subjects include topics from the "Succession Crisis of 1844" to the "Modernization of Mormonism." The symposium is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
