SALT LAKE CITY — A family of five was taken to the hospital Saturday following a rollover accident on I-215, police said.

The family was in a Ford Fusion traveling south on I-215 near 600 North about 12:35 p.m. when police said it was cut off by a Chevy Cavalier, causing the Ford to veer off the freeway. The Ford then hit a utility poll and rolled into a ditch, landing upside-down, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Nigbur.

A 3-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition. A 2-year-old boy and the family's father also were taken to the hospital in poor condition, and the family's mother and 5-month-old baby were taken in with minor injuries.

By Saturday night, police expected all involved in the crash to survive.

"Everybody is actually in a lot better condition," Nigbur said around 8:30 p.m. "That includes the little girl. She's got some head injuries that they're monitoring, but otherwise it looks like she'll be OK."

The 700 North off-ramp was closed Saturday afternoon while police investigated the crash.

Police are unsure whether the ejected child was wearing a seat belt, but the 2-year-old and 5-month-old were. Police also are unsure whether the Chevy Cavalier intentionally cut off the car or not.

The driver of the Cavalier did not stop when the accident occurred, police said.
