Here are some books that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACKS

"TO HELL ON A FAST HORSE: Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and the Epic Chase to Justice in the Old West," by Mark Lee Gardner, William Morrow, $26.99 (nf)

This book is the first dual biography of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, each a larger-than-life figure who would not have become legendary without the other. Gardner digs behind the myth to give a detailed account of the Kid's 1881 escape from the Lincoln County jail; a complete narrative of the Kid's death incorporating all known eyewitness accounts; and using new research into previously unknown sources, Gardner gives the reader his own idea of who actually killed Pat Garrett in 1908 in Las Cruces, N.M.

More hardbacks recently released:

"Model Home," by Eric Puchner (f); "Bargaining With the Devil: When to Negotiate, When to Fight," by Robert Mnookin (nf); "Devils in Exile," by Chuck Hogan (f); "The 188th Crybaby Brigade: A Skinny Jewish Kid from Chicago Fights Hezbollah (A Memoir)," by Joel Chasnoff (nf); "Fly Fishing With Darth Vader: And Other Adventures with Evangelical Wrestlers, Political Hitmen, and Jewish Cowboys," by Matt Labash (nf)

PAPERBACKS

"THE LITTLE GIANT OF ABERDEEN COUNTY," by Tiffany Baker, Grand Central Publishing, $13.99

When Truly Plaice's mother was pregnant, the town of Aberdeen joined together in betting how record-breakingly huge the baby boy would ultimately be. The girl who proved to be Truly paid the price of her enormity; her father blamed her for her mother's death in childbirth, and was totally ill-equipped to raise either this giant child or her polar opposite sister Serena Jane, the epitome of feminine perfection.

It is only when Truly finds her calling — the ability to heal illness with herbs and naturopathic techniques — hidden within the folds of Robert Morgan's family quilt, that she begins to regain control over her life and herself.

"MORNINGS IN JENIN," by Susan Abulhawa, Bloomsbury, $15 (f)
