Icelanders plan Viking feast in Spanish Fork

SPANISH FORK — Descendents of the original Icelanders who helped establish Spanish Fork look forward to a traditional Viking feast every February with foods such as shark, dried fish and sheep.

This year, the Icelandic Association of Utah has scheduled the ancient Viking mid-winter tradition, ?rrablot (or Thorrablot) for 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, in the Veterans Memorial Building, 400 N. Main.

The feast is catering the event and will be serving shredded lamb, breaded haddock, sweetened rutabagas and Scandinavian cake. Tickets for adults are $15 if purchased by Feb. 19 or $18 at the door; and $4 for children under age 11 if prepaid or $5 at the door. While adults get the more exotic and traditional menu, children get to feast on lasagna and hot dogs.

The association will recognize two descendents of the early Icelandic pioneers who began migrating to the town in the 1850s. A children's choir and later the entire group will sing Icelandic songs in the native language.

The association also plans to auction a quilt during the event.
