LEHI —In a battle between two of the top 4A boys basketball teams, Lehi defeated Timpview 68–58, behind the strong post play of William Walker and Josh Scott.
Walker had a game-high 20 points and Scott added 18, as the Pioneers improved to 14-3, 6-2 in region. They are now tied with Timpview for second place in Region 7.
"I thought we did a good job of controlling the ball and not panicking," said Lehi head coach Craig Gladwell. "And in the end, we got it in to Will [Walker]."
In the first quarter, the Thunderbirds focused on stopping Walker, which left Scott open to score nine points in the first eight minutes of the game.
Once the Timpview defense tried to compensate for the two big men, Walker took the game over.
"He's hard to guard," Gladwell said. "With his size, experience and all his moves, he's a pretty good player."
Lehi led 31–23 at half time and was able to maintain the lead for the whole game. Timpview was able to make it a six-point game with less than one minute left, but Lehi was able to beat the full-court press and make free throws to close out the game.
"I was a little frustrated because we kept giving up the open three," Gladwell said. "But once we took that away, we were fine."
Ryan Sagers led Timpview with 18 points and three 3-pointers. Eli Robinson, who has been the Thunderbirds' leading scorer this season, was never allowed to really get into a rhythm and finished with 16 points.
With the loss, Timpview falls to 12-6, 7-2 in region. Their next game will be at home on Friday against Westlake (2-14, 0-7).
After beating the top two teams in the region, Gladwell said the trick is now to continue to prepare hard for every game. Lehi's next game will be at home against Timpanogos (4-13, 2-6) on Friday.
