Utah Utes women's basketball: Team ready for pink-out against TCU
SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah women's basketball team celebrates the "Power of Pink" against the TCU Horned Frogs tonight at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center, where the Utes will begin their second round of Mountain West Conference games.
Anyone wearing pink will be admitted free to tonight's game, and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free pink hat as the Utes do their part to help highlight breast cancer awareness.
TCU is ranked No. 24 in the nation and dropped the Utes by 20 points in Fort Worth back in January. However, Utah sports a 10-2 record at home this season and will be looking to avenge that loss.
TCU's Helena Sverrisdottier leads the MWC in assists at 5.0 per game. She also averages 13.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Utah's Kalee Whipple averages 16.1 points per game, good for second in the MWC, and was named Player of the Week in the conference last week after leading the Utes to a road win at Colorado State.
Utah's Taryn Wicijowski is a top candidate for Freshman of the Year honors in the MWC. She comes to Utah from Canada and is averaging 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and boasts a shooting percentage of 56.2.
Halie Sawyer leads the Utes in rebounding, pulling down nearly eight boards per game, and she also has 25 blocks on the season.
From the point guard position, Janita Badon directs the Utes' offensive attack with 4.7 assists per game. She also averages 2.4 steals. Both stats are ranked in the top five in the MWC.
Utah's overall record is 13-8 and 4-4 in the MWC. TCU is 17-5 and 7-2 in conference play.
