The Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation will honor five Utahns for their contributions to sports in the state during the annual Paul Ream Scholarship/Distinguished Service Awards banquet.
Dale Gardner of North Ogden, Frank Tremea of Clinton, Jay Monsen of Mount Pleasant, Mae Miya of Layton and the late Larry Palmer of Salt Lake City will be recognized during the Feb. 25 event at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, with a 6:15 p.m. reception preceding the 7 p.m. dinner. For reservations ($40), send checks to USHFF secretary Scott Mayne, 10182 S. Cornerstone, South Jordan, UT 84095.
Gardner was Weber State's athletic director for nine years, helping the Wildcats built an outstanding all-around program after working 13 years as Utah State's assistant AD.
Tremea was a teacher and administrator at Roy High School for 30 years, and worked 40 years in the city's recreation program.
Monsen called thousands of games in various high school and college sports, working primarily for Southern Utah University and BYU and becoming known as a voice of the Cougars on KBYU-TV broadcasts.
Miya was a teacher, coach and administrator at Bonneville High School for 24 years, often serving in leadership positions in coaches' organizations.
Palmer was honored by Highland High School with the naming of the football stadium, after his 34-year career in the Salt Lake City School District included his tenure as Highland's principal.
