Groundbreaking for new church Sunday

New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Kearns will break ground on a new church at 5133 S. Heath Ave., on Sunday, Jan. 31, 12:30 p.m.

The church was founded in 1922 as an African-American congregation. The church's location is currently at 6196 S. Redwood Road.

Professor to speak at U. Newman Center

Why do good people suffer? Why does God allow suffering? Peter Kreeft, a professor of philosophy at Boston College, will discuss these and related questions in the annual Aquinas Lecture at the University of Utah Newman Center, 175 S. University St., on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

Kreeft is the author of many religious books.

Black genealogy event scheduled

To commemorate Black History Month, the Utah Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and the Family History Library will stage the seventh annual African American Family History Research Series.

The free event will be Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Family History Library, 35 N. West Temple, Salt Lake City. The daylong series of classes and workshops will begin with a keynote address by author and genealogist Darius Gray.

His presentation, "The African American Family: We Must Remember!," will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the main floor classroom.

Salt Lake pastor installed as Baptist official

The National Baptist Congress of Christian Education has announced the installation of the Rev. France A. Davis as fifth vice president to the educational arm of the National Baptist Convention Inc.

Rev. Davis, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and a professor at the University of Utah, is a prominent leader and activist in Utah.
